There are several uses for a computer. The one we use at home is different from the one we use at work and it's different from the ones that engineers use. We know that there are a of lot components for very specific purposes but you also need to know that there are different breeds of a desktop computer and yes, they are different from all other kinds of computers. For one thing, a desktop computer is different from a laptop. Their names are obvious enough to illustrate the difference so I will not go into that matter. What I will go discuss however are the main advantages of a desktop computer over a laptop and the different breeds of desktop computer. advertisement
Firstly, I'd like to point out that a desktop computer simply has longer staying power. When a new RAM comes out or a new video card or a new motherboard comes out, you can replace the one that you currently have and upgrade your system. This actually costs less than buying a new set as opposed to the limited upgrade potential of a laptop that you replace when it turns two or three years old because it will undoubtedly be obsolete and will lack any of the new convenient features that should be common in the new models. If you've had experience with an HP desktop computer and other variations of the same brand, you'll see how each can be differently built for various jobs. The one you use at home for example can be used for lots of stuff. Like I posted last time, you can use it for simple net browsing and typing, gaming and/or modeling as long as it has and can support the right hardware.
Then there are office workstations for companies that do a lot of technical stuff, like a design laboratory or an animation studio. If you've ever enjoyed a good digitally animated movie, you'd be surprised that it takes several months to flesh out a few minutes of fluid motion in a scene. Animation studios have an army of these high end workstations working to render those animations as fast as possible. Ask any digital artist, it isn't the creative process that takes forever; it's rendering and saving the work. Anyway, that's another kind of desktop computer. Environmentally friendly computers are the Thin Clients. These machines are designed to drastically minimize carbon dioxide emissions and are most suited for hardware with low requirements. It uses less power and it's probably the kind you'll find in an office that mainly does typing work or simple internet browsing. It mainly depends on a server for most processing and they are easily managed. So these are the different breeds. If you want to limit the energy of consumption in your office and keep it easily managed, you should know what kind to get and alternately if you plan to be some big time animation producer, you'll know what you'll be providing for in a budget. As always, don't just chuck stuff into your shopping cart, get smart and know what you'll be doing. You don't want to find yourself waiting for days for a rendering experiment to finish on your home desktop pc.
