Tech Maintenance: Cleaning Your Pc

Tags: , ,

One of the things that you might overlook about your computer is keeping it clean on the outside as well as the inside. Yes, we do give our computer a lot of attention but we also tend to overlook things as basic as cleanliness. People and especially a few of my friends actually just focus on Software improvement, hardware improvement and the general improvement of the area. While software improvement can give you stuff to do on the computer and while hardware can increase the performance of the computer, improving the area where you use it can be summarized into using more comfortable furniture (i.e. chairs, computer table, plush toys etc.) or simply by not bringing food into the area.

What a lot of people forget however is to control the slow build-up of dust. Just as grime and dust can slow down and affect the efficiency of other machines, so too can it affect the insides of your pc. The main way that it can mess with your PC is that it can dirty up the cooling fan, CPU fan or the other internal fans. When that happens, it won't get as cool as it used to and it will in turn make things easier to burn. In more merciful situations, if you forget to clean it and leave it to collect grime, the computer or some part of it will simply refuse to work and you'll have to send it into a shop to get it fixed.

Before doing anything make sure you have the appropriate tools for the job. You need a screwdriver, a brush, a clean rag and some cleaning liquid (the ones specifically made for electronic devices). The first step is to turn the Computer off and to unplug all the cables. Make sure that you're wearing something that can protect you from small electrical charges. Other than getting yourself hurt, I'm also worried that a quick jerk can potentially destroy something else. When you're done taking the cables out, start unfastening and unscrewing the casing. Some cases might not need any unscrewing because it can be unfastened. There are a few models out there that have different sized holes for each screw, so let's just be on the safe side. Don't try to take everything apart because then putting it back together will be much harder. Do not unplug any of the wires inside! Just take the casing out so you can wipe or brush easily. Now, the main reason why everything inside is dirty is because your cooling fan is dirty. Although dirt will still build up inside it, the cooling fan can make things dirtier faster because is spreads the dirt that is already on it as it accumulates its own filth. Computer cases will usually have five fans to cool the system excluding the CPU cooler and other individual fans. You should work on the cooling fan carefully so that it can revolve faster and so that it doesn’t blow any grime into the system. Like I said, even if everything inside is clean, a dirty cooling fan can make dirt build up faster if it isn't cleaned properly. When you're cleaning the processor, the CPU or any of the other chips inside, make sure that the liquid that you're using is the one that's really made for electronics. I’d rather use that than water. Wipe carefully and precisely. You don't want to break something and you don't want to leave the job half done. If you've built a custom pc then you probably know how important cooling is to your system. Keeping a clean cooling fan is a cheaper and more convenient solution compared to dumping liquid nitrogen over stuff. Okay, a clean cooling fan might not help overclocking, but to the ordinary joes out there, it’ll keep your system cool even in hot weather.
