I seem to hear more and more about ergonomics these days. Friends and relatives constantly ask me how I work since because they know that I deal with computers a lot and I basically work around the clock, which really is the case when you try to do consultant work here and there, outsource programming and run a blog site. People everywhere are starting to feel the need for ergonomics because they too work around the clock on computers. Whether you're a clerk, a manager of your own store or even if you barely deal with a computer at all, you'll start feeling the stress of a desk job. advertisement
I can't teach you the proper ergonomics of working in front of a computer because I'm not a qualified physician, but what I do know is some minor improvements to your work area that can make it less strenuous. There are a lot of simple ways to remove stress from working on your computer and you may even implement it while you're reading this.
- Reduce the brightness of your monitor just enough that it doesn't bother you.
- Sit comfortably. If your chair isn't comfy get one. If you don't have a comfy chair build one or buy one, preferably one that compliments your back.
- Adjust the position of your monitor. Your eyes should be aligned to the top edge of the screen. You can use a book if it isn't that tall.
- Take a break.
Get up and stop staring at the computer, move your legs for a couple of minutes and do a little stretching. You'll feel more refreshed than you think. - Use comfortable hardware. If you think the touch pad mouse on your laptop is uncomfortable, get a comfortable mouse. If you think typing is awkward, reposition your keyboard or find a position that makes it feel comfortable.
- Proper posture. You should give yourself than chance to relax but the proper posture is the best way to get your blood circulating.
