Using a BitTorrent is the best way to transfer huge files from computer to computer short of transferring them through devices. If you want to transfer files that are not larger than 200mb then you can try websites like rapidshare or mediafire. With BitTorrents you can use torrent files for free downloads or free file sharing with other users over the internet. If you've ever used programs like Limewire or other forms of downloading programs, then you might be familiar with this set up.
The first step to torrents would be to download a BitTorrent client. I preffer µTorrent since it's a free client and you can play Tetris with it (by going to the 'Help' tab, and then clicking on About µTorrent and then pressing 'T') but you can also choose Azureus or any other free clients. advertisement
After you've downloaded one of those, you'll be able to download torrent files by going to websites like The Pirate Bay and download one. The only downside to using torrents is that a lot of the things that are available for download are licensed material. If you want to be sure that you're downloading legal material then you should give mininova a try. It should be fairly quick, but that isn't the huge file that you want to download. You open the tracker so that your client can start downloading.
Size aside, the speed of your download should depend on two things. The first, obviously, should be the speed of your internet connection.
If your connection is slow, a 1Gb file can take as long as a couple of days to finish downloading. If it's fast, then leaving your computer on all day might just do the trick.
The other thing that it depends on is the numbers of seeds as opposed to the number of leeches. As a matter of fact, the number of seeds seem to matter more than all the other factors. Seeders are the other users that are uploading the file because they have finished downloading the same file and are sharing it with you. There's really no risk in getting a virus from your other peers or other uploaders. Leeches or peers are the people like you who are downloading the same thing. If there are more leeches than there are seeds then you’ll have very little progress no matter how fast you’re internet is.
You should also remember to exclude your BitTorrent client from your firewall so that it won’t block the transfer of files. Now you know how to use torrents. Easy right?
