Let There Be Wi-fi... At Home

Tags: , ,

There are people with big families that have needs that are much different than those with smaller families, obviously. So when you want to give your children and yourself the benefit of being always connected to the internet and not wanting to have to wait your turn on a desktop and you don't want to have to hear them fighting over whose turn it is to use the Ethernet connection, then it's so much better to a wireless network because that way you get to have a certain level of control and you transferring files from one computer or another shouldn't be a problem. This isn't only convenient but it's also practical on several levels. If you want to show people something on youtube or some other website and would rather not have them move from the living room, then a laptop with internet connection is the best course of action. Some people tend to think that setting up a wireless network is hard.

It might be, but it shouldn't always be that way because no rule in the universe says that everything needs to be hard. It's been done before and other people have suffered through trial and error often enough to allow you to have an easy time installing yours. So now I'll be discussing some of the key things to remember. One of the most important things to remember in setting up your wireless network is the access point or the AP. When you buy your router, make sure that it has this feature because it will give you firewall security and a web-based configuration interface.

You should also consider the compatibility of your wireless router with your other devices and the range that it has. Most of the time, your choice shouldn't really affect the compatibility with the other devices that you get since they are usually compatible, but just be sure to ask the clerk for compatibility to be safe. When you’re looking for range, it's best that you get one that is limited to your own home. Your connection might extend to your neighbor’s house and they might take advantage of the free connection that they get from you. So limit the range unless you’re okay with giving your neighbor free internet or anyone within range for that matter. Security isn't always a feature that comes with the package that you buy so if your signal does extend beyond the reach of your home, a password will help you protect your information. Your neighbors might be the least of your worries because some people that might come across your wireless network will have an easy time going through your traffic and viewing private information that you send across the internet. Security in your wireless network should be one of your top priorities. When everything is set up, you need to configure all the computers that are going to be within your wireless network. This may be difficult if each of them has different operating systems but it should be no problem if they're all the same since the steps will be similar. Most computers should be able to connect to the router easily. When you're trying to secure your wireless network with something other than the use of the resident password, try and consult a technician for the appropriate settings so that he can configure the computers as well. If you followed the router's manual then everything should be fine and you'll soon feel the convenience of having a wifi network at home.
