Tags: computer software, software, chrome will be available for download
The Google Chrome OS might be the new kid on the block that's out to threaten operating systems like Mac or Windows, but it's going to have to prove a lot of things or otherwise, just prove itself to it's own people who spend most of their time on the internet. Luckily for us, we're not going to have wait any longer for our questions to be answered since chrome will be available for download sometime this week. There are several things to expect from it but, there might be people out there that might expect too much from it.
For one thing, the Google Chrome OS is meant for netbooks rather than full blown desktops. advertisement
If you expect it to run high end games or picture editors, then you're expecting too much from it. If you're expecting it to give you the best online experience in terms of browsing then you're asking for exactly what it wants to deliver. Since a lot of the interaction will be done online you can expect new ways of interacting with the internet. If you want other applications to work, I'm sure using Wine might suffice for those needs (although I'm still not sure whether Wine can run on chrome). But the next question should be about internet security.
How secure will you be on Chrome and will you still be threatened by any of the viruses that you meet on other operating systems? Google believes that because you'll be keeping part of your information, and by part you might be keeping a huge bulk of it online, then you'll practically be virus free.
But then you might still have a lot to worry about in terms of losing data or someone taking control of your files by grabbing them while you use WI-FI. The latter is entirely possible since the operating system is targeted at netbooks.
Personally, I believe that Google is serious about a light OS targeted at netbooks. Linux is still trying to out-do or catch up to everything Microsoft is and in doing so it has failed several times in the past at attracting new users. What I admire most about Chrome is that it doesn't seem to market towards being as competitive with the existing operating systems, rather it just sticks to what it knows best and attracts users who enjoy using computers for casual use rather than spend hours playing, editing or doing God knows what with it.
