 After the huge stream of weighing the pros and cons, mostly the pros of Windows 7, Wired.com comes out with an article of pure cons. I partially feel a bit embarrassed myself because I've been blogging about how wonderful the desktop is despite the other side of the new features that can dwarf that one up side. I'm an eye candy guy and these things matter to me. Yes, I already run Mint on my laptop so there's no need to point me in that direction. The tech magazine lays out the things that have already been said about Windows 7 and how it's going to be a problem and how it already is a problem, but it also tosses in some insight about what we missed about the hyped up OS.

If you think that you're fine with your XP, then stick with it. Human beings have this inane ability to deny themselves what they want. In most cases this instinct of self deprivation are proven to be silly, but some whims are sillier. So if you plan on getting Windows 7 because it's the latest thing out there, stop yourself when it doesn't feel right. First, let's consider the practicality of going 7. There is no Windows XP upgrade to Windows 7. This means that if you’re not running Vista you’ll need to back-up files, wipe your hard drive clean and then install the disk. It's a hassle that might even put your applications at risk of never running again.
Microsoft might say that whatever runs on XP will still run on Windows 7, but frankly if they're so sure of that transcendence an XP virtualization mode should have been redundant. No upgrade path also means taking the more expensive route and paying about twice as much as you would have paid. One of the things that we've forgotten, or rather the "hyped up" community has forgotten, is that this fall isn't only going to see the launching of one big OS, but two. Again, I find myself embarrassed to remember that Snow Leopard is coming out this September, on a release date much earlier than Microsoft scheduled. This would be foolish to keep in mind and consider. I know there are PC guys out there that would ordinarily shrug this off because a Mac is a Mac. They fail to remember that the same can be said about the OS that they treasure so much. Ignore this next part if you're comfortable with your PC, but you might want to consider Snow Leopard if you want something different for a change. So give the negative side a think. Lord knows that I've been bombarding you with enough positive plugs to sound like a Microsoft affiliate. Just think of "PFP". You can even sound it off whenever someone shoves something new in your face. When you're considering a change into something new, think of practicality, functionality and preference. This has always worked out for me and I hope it will work out for you. Cheers!
